How Sustainable Is Groupon’s Business Model?
Perfect! Finally somebody says what I’ve been saying casually to friends sand co-workers for months now. Reibstein makes some great points in this article below so I’ll try not to bash Groupon to hard. I’ll just let you read this article and you can draw your own conclusions.
Personalty, I never really understood what was so revolutionary about Groupon, or the deal-a-day biz, yet I’ve always thought it was flawed. Yeah, it can be useful in niche situations or in times of economic hardship when people are more careful about spending money. However, if you’re like me, you are a good steward of your money (well, at least most of the time), and you really don’t like being tricked, bribed, sold, or pressured into buying shit (that in most cases) you don’t need, or otherwise would not buy. Also, if you’re like me, you probably wouldn’t take advantage of a deal-a-day deal (from Groupon or any of the other 200 copycat sites) unless it was something you were already planning to buy and you can just save money. Great for you/consumers, but bad for businesses (especially small businesses) who will fail at attracting long-term (loyal) customers.
